The Cancer Institute of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Kunming Medical College jointly used this herb while performing acute toxicity tests, long-term toxicity tests, and other researches on white blood cell regeneration and immunity enhancement. The results are as follows:

l        The research of toxicity reduction and survival ratio of white rats   

The chief scientist of molecular biology at the Cancer Institute of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science, Xu Ningzhi, proved through tests that sanyang kantai can reduce the toxicity and side effects of chemotherapeutics, while protecting white and red blood cells and thrombocytes. The white rat survival experiment showed that the survival ratio of the rats in the sanyang kantai group is 56.2%, which is higher than that of the rhG-CSF group (survival ratio of 37.5%). Considering the quality of living of the white rats and their developmental trend, we can conclude that the long-term curative effect of sanyang kantai is more effective (refer to graph):

A. The effect of sensitivity enhancement refers to the treatment indicators of the non-small cell lung cancer, which is not sensitive to radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

B. Quality of living: refers to the indicators of living quality of a cancer patient during the time when he receives radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

C. The economic indicators of treatment: refers to a kind of indicators which can evaluate the social value of a herb, and this kind of indicators involves medical insurance premiums covered by the government and the costs of herbs that patients must pay.

l        Clinical Study 

The clinical study of this drug is performed in the Tumor Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science and the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital. The curative effect is appraised according to the tumor appraisal standards of the WHO. The quality of living of patients with cancer is assessed according to QOL, and the general situation of the patients is assessed according to KPS standards. A brief introduction is as follows:

The clinical study of the sensitivity enhancement effect of sanyang kantai to chemotherapy given to middle and advanced stage lung cancer patients    Professor Zhao Hongchang and Doctor Zhang Wei from the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital performed the clinical study on the sensitivity enhancement effect of sanyang kantai to chemotherapy given to middle and advanced stage lung cancer patients. The observed results are as follows: There is a general remission rate of: CR+PR=84.48% in the treatment group (observed 116 cases: SYKT+ chemotherapy) while a general remission rate of: CR+PR = 59.26% in the control group (observed 108 cases: G-CSF + chemotherapy). The general remission rate of the treatment group is obviously higher than that of the control group (p<0.01). The curative effect for adenocarcinoma of lung which is not sensitive to chemotherapy is especially good.

We found through treatments that sanyang kantai can reduce the toxicity and side effects caused by chemotherapy. The long-term follow-up results of sanyang kantai towards the reduction of white blood cells resulting from chemotherapy are much better than that of G-CSF. At the same time, sanyang kantai can protect red blood cells and thrombocytes, and can evidently improve the quality of living of cancer patients.(see the clinical report written by Professor Zhao Hongchang and Doctor Zhangwei)

The Clinical Curative Effect Graph for SYKT and G-CSF

A phased progress had been achieved in using sanyang kantai and radiotherapy to treat local advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer. No evidence shows an ideal cure to middle and advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer with modern medical science in the past. However, a the clinical study performed in the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital now finds that sanyang kantai is effective in treating non-small cell lung cancer together with chemotherapy. With the permission of the director of National Tumor GCP Center, Sunyan (an academician of the Chinese Academy of Science) and with the Tumor Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science taking the lead, Peking Union Hospital and other medical organizations jointly conducted "polycentric, random, and double blind trials of treating local late stage non-small cell lung cancer with radiotherapy and sanyang kantai". There isn't another example like this one amongst similar traditional Chinese medicines and patent medicines. Currently, this work has been completed 40%, and the phased achievements show that sanyang kantai group is superior to the control group.
